A Nazi grenadier
A
NaziWehrmacht grenadierSee, I fixed it for you. The Nazis were Germans but not all Germans were Nazis.
If you were in a foxhole with an American or British soldier and you pointed to this uniformed German crawling through the grass towards you only a mere 50 yards a way, the G.I would most likely say, “You’d better kill that G-damned Nazi before he kills you.”
You bring up a good point, though. Many of the Wehrmacht were disgusted by the Nazis! This blog tries to relate the American and British sentiment of the time….nationalism, bravado, blind cockiness, underlying shear terror…and yes, naive generalizations learned through years of mass media and government propaganda.
In hindsight, the war is so interesting because of the ironies and nuances one can find by observing not only the men and women who fought, but what they thought about those they were fighting.
